About the centre

As a leading cluster in the UK, Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) aims to foster new understandings and perspectives of Chinese contemporary arts, design, media and visual culture through curating exhibition, interdisciplinary practices and academic research.

Initiated in 2007 through an international network with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (CAFA) and the China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou (CAA), CCVA is hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at Birmingham City University, UK.

With extensive regional to international partnerships, CCVA brings together artists, designers, curators and researchers who are working with, or are interested in the contemporary contexts of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in order to share expertise, understanding, critiques and ideas of innovation.

Using its unique position in the UK, CCVA continues its transcultural dialogues by questioning the existing histories of Chinese contemporary arts, design media and visual culture, while fostering new ways of thinking and modes of knowledge in relation to today’s global-Chinese situation.

CCVA offers academic support and joint supervisions within the CCVA institutional network partnerships for postgraduate and research degree studies. It draws particularly on its legacy of PhD research programmes, as well as the new MA Contemporary Arts China, in collaboration with a number of internationally renowned art galleries and museums, research institutes, publishing houses and artist studios.
