Explore Birmingham interiors

Search online for an interior space that you would like to visit in Birmingham (this should be somewhere you haven’t been to before eg. library, retail, restaurant, gallery etc). Using photographs of your chosen space, study the interior and make written and sketched observations of materials, fittings, furniture, structure, lighting and decoration.

Research

Expand your knowledge on colour trends - interior design colour trends are heavily influenced by fashion trends. In fact, most interior design trends including colour, material and finish also rely on fashion trends that have filtered from the fashion capital of the world – Milan. Have a look through some 2020 colour trends

Capture exciting colour palettes. Check out Pantone for great colour inspiration! Take photographs, collect objects/ papers/ materials that have beautiful and exciting colour combinations.

Measure yourself or someone you live with standing, walking and sitting to create a series of simple ergonomic charts of human proportions and movement.

Sketch

A mechanical invention to improve your daily life under lockdown, the more elaborate and bizarre the better. Take a look at the illustrations of Heath Robinson for inspiration.

Model

Create your own pop-up concept model, construct, photograph and sketch! Have a look through some example templates

Draw

Find out about orthographic projection. Draw a kitchen utensil in top view, front view and side view (aka elevations) at a scale of 1:2 (half real-life size). Use just a pencil and a ruler to construct the drawing. Have a scroll through some top tips
