Biography

I’m Faisal Saeed, an Associate Professor at the College of Computing, Birmingham City University, where I lead the MSc Artificial Intelligence course.

Academic expertise

I’ve published in high-impact journals including IEEE Transactions on Engineering ManagementIEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics  and many others.

In terms of leadership, I’ve taken on a variety of roles: I lead the Research Summer School at BCU, PGXPO 2024 & 2025, and serve as Head of the Smart Health Lab at BCU. Previously, I headed the Data Science Research Group and Research Unit at Taibah University and served as Vice Head of the Industry Collaboration Committee at UTM. I’ve chaired 12 international conferences and served as Associate and Guest Editor for 25 indexed journals.

My contributions have been recognized through awards such as Researcher of the Year (I AM BCU Awards 2025), Research Staff Award (CEBE, BCU 2023), multiple Best Paper Awards, and accolades from international innovation exhibitions.

My research spans several sectors where AI is making a significant impact. In healthcare, I’ve worked on predictive analytics for patient outcomes and AI-driven imaging diagnostics. In cybersecurity, I’ve explored threat and anomaly detection systems. In construction, I’ve contributed to house price and EPC prediction models. My work in pharmacy includes intelligent decision system for prescription traceability that connects GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies, and patients. These efforts are part of my ongoing commitment to using AI to drive innovation and solve real-world problems.

Journey to BCU

Before joining BCU, I worked as an Assistant and then Associate Professor in the Information Systems Department at Taibah University in Saudi Arabia from 2017 to 2021. Prior to that, I was a Senior Lecturer in the same field at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) from 2014 to 2017.

I gained my BSc in Computers (Information Technology) from Cairo University in 2005, followed by an MSc in Information Technology Management and a PhD in Computer Science from UTM in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

Notable projects

One particularly exciting project I’m working on is a KTP with Jhoots Pharmacy. We’re developing an AI-powered decision support system that creates an intelligent traceability system for prescriptions. The goal is to connect GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies, and patients to enhance coordination and care.

I’ve also led the BCU Research Summer School and the PGXPO postgraduate research showcase, both platforms for students to grow and share their work. Additionally, I’ve chaired the BCU AI Symposium and ICACIn’25 Conference. These experiences reflect my passion for applied research, student engagement, and fostering meaningful collaborations between academia and industry.

Industry connections

I maintain active collaborations with several industry partners. I’ve participated in multiple Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), including projects with ProBuild 360 in the construction sector and Jhoots Pharmacy in healthcare. These projects often help bridge the gap between academia and industry, which I believe is crucial for impactful research.

I also supervise placement students and help facilitate long-term collaborations with companies such as Amazon UK, ICONICS, Buzz Mobile App Ltd., CMS Promotions Limited, Abraham Nursing Homes Limited, and Jaguar Land Rover.

In addition, I’ve worked with companies like Smart Big Data Ltd in the UK and I-Med in Saudi Arabia on submitting research proposals to Innovate UK and RDIA.  I’ve also worked with Kinetik Solutions (UK) to commercialize research outcomes for TRIZ Cards in the service industry.
