Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Built Environment, a Fellow of AdvanceHE (FHEA) and a Chartered Construction Manager with the Chartered Institute of Building - MCIOB. I lead several industry related modules for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including Sustainable Construction, Bid Strategy and Procurement.
Academic expertise
My very first professional role started off as a Quantity Surveyor for a major Civil Engineering firm. As a new Quantity Surveyor, I was thrown in the deep end early (with the right support). I undertook project evaluations and was soon tasked with some Project Management duties working on behalf of my employer – the client. I subsequently moved into Construction Project Management and finally specialised in Occupational Health and Safety of workers in the industry. I continue to work in the capacity of an independent consultant in the areas of Safety and Sustainability.
I have had an interesting journey in the Built Environment which has finally brought me to BCU. My undergraduate degree was carried out at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana and my master’s degree was undertaken at Nottingham Trent University. I also undertook my doctorate at the Nottingham Business School in NTU. In the academic realm, I have had several teaching and research roles including at Loughborough University, University of Brighton, University of Johannesburg and Nottingham Trent University.
Industry connections
I have close links with industry partners. I continue to work with my industry connections e.g. Keepmoat Homes, BAM, Morgan Sindall, Volkerfitzpatrick, Building Alliance, Fulker Bailey Russell etc. I am also particularly of my connection with small and micro firms who fall within the category of ‘hard-to-reach’ and often get overlooked in decision-making processes in the wider industry.
My students have gone on to work as Academics, Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors etc. On the international scene, some of my former students have gone to work in crucial roles in Canada, Siera Leone, St Kitts and Nevis, Nigeria, UAE and Ghana.
Notable projects
Our current works in the Centre for Future Homes and Infrastructure Futures Group are cutting edge. For example, helping lead national dialogue in decarbonisation of new and existing building stocks or exploring leading indicators in safety with National Highways.
I believe my strong skills lie in embedding people management in all areas of work. In addition to sharing technical knowledge in the Built Environment, I am very passionate about teaching and learning about team building and support amongst working teams (including mental health). As a mental health advocate and a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA), I believe promoting soft skills and creating a safe space for workers ensures a higher level of project delivery and project success.
