Beethoven 7 Variations on "Bei Männern welche Liebe fühlen"
Schumann Fantasiestücke, Op 73
Grieg Cello Sonata

Three contrasting works feature in today’s recital.  Beethoven’s Variations for cello and piano are based on Mozart’s duet "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" from The Magic Flute, in which the piano is the Princess Pamina and the cello Papageno, the bird-catcher.  Schumann’s three lovely Fantasiestücke are by turns wistful, playful and fiery.

Conceived for clarinet and piano, they were published simultaneously in versions for cello and for violin.  Grieg gave himself a hard time over his only cello sonata, written late in his life, but it has remained popular with cellists and audiences who love its romantic melodies and Norwegian charm.

Running time approx. 55 minutes
