"ORPHEUS BRITANNICUS A COLLECTION OF THE CHOICEST SONGS FOR One, Two, and Three Voices, COMPOS'D By Mr Henry Purcell. TOGETHER With such Symphonies for Violins or Flutes"

VoxBox: Our Orpheus Britannicus – Celebrating the Songs of Henry Purcell

Students from the Vocal & Operatic Department, and Historical Performance Departments
Director Christopher Bucknall

This concert celebrates the music of Henry Purcell, arguably the finest master of setting the English language in song. The extraordinary two-volume compendium of songs, Orpheus Britannicus, was published by his widow, Frances, in 1698 and 1702, and contains works from his odes, stage works and operas.

We also mark the donation to Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of an original copy of Orpheus Britannicus, which will be on display this evening, and an original English spinet which will be played in the concert.

Running time approx. one hour and 45 minutes, including interval.
