Popular music from Brazil
Shanti Jayasinha director
Banda Brasileira is a new large Royal Birmingham Conservatoire ensemble exploring the many-faceted music of that musical melting-pot, Brazil. From Samba and Baião to the folkloric music from the North East of Brazil, not forgetting the sophisticated sound of Bossa Nova which sprung up in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro in the early 1960s.
The band was founded by the versatile, multi-instrumentalist Shanti Jayasinha, whose career has taken in a dizzying array of musical styles, from klezmer to calypso, from the Hindustani to Afro-Caribbean traditions.
