Library News Last updated 28 August

From 30 September to 2 October 2025, UK Construction Week will be taking place right on our doorstep at the NEC – and it’s the 10th anniversary! So why not prepare for the largest built environment event in the country by checking out our e-resources? No matter where you are in your construction project, we have just what you need to get started.

Finding the right standards

Standards are key to any construction project. But where can you find them? There’s a few places they may be:

  • With 10,000 documents and standards related to construction, British Standards Online Library is the definitive source of information on British standards and all European and international standards adopted as British Standards.
  • For standards related to valuations and surveying, check out RICS isurv. This database houses everything published by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, including their Red Book Global Standards, forms and guidance.

Finding technical reports

Ever wondered how the British Cement Association, Concrete Society or Steel Construction Institute would approach the project? Then look no further. Construction Information Service (CIS) gives you access to technical guidance, building regulations, industry reports and the latest construction news – all stemming from the leading professional organisations, trade associations and information providers in the construction world.

Finding the right contracts

In the construction industry, standard forms of contracts – developed over years by industry and legal experts – are used either as written or adjusted with clients. There’s a wide variety of contracts depending on the size, type and demands of the construction project, which can all be accessed through Lexis+ UK. There’s a handy video explaining how to find them if you get stuck!

Estimating costs and timescales

Did you know BCIS Online has two easy-to-use calculators which help you estimate the average price and duration of your construction project? By inputting the details of your prospective build – such as function, location and size – BCIS Online can give you accurate estimates, based on reliable and current data. From the latest prices to five year forecasts, BCIS Online also allows you to dig deeper into past and current construction costs in detail.

Researching the area

If you’re looking for information on the local area, Digimap is a fantastic place to start. The popular Ordnance Survey service offers maps in a range of styles and includes data such as postcodes, administrative boundaries, contours and digital terrain models. While you’re there, why not also check out:

  • Historical maps
  • Geological surveys
  • Aerial photography
  • Visualisations of census data, including demographic, population density and socio-economic information
