Mohammed travelled to Port Elizabeth, right at the bottom of South Africa. He took time out of his placement to take part in the scheme.

Happy, excited kids

“I volunteered at a centre for local children, teaching them about sport. Every day we would be teaching them about football, rugby and netball. The kids were so eager to learn, and couldn’t be happier to be there - school was their favourite place.”

“In the second week, we participated in a few more volunteer projects around Port Elizabeth. We helped care for sick people by going door to door, and we also helped out at a library that was being set up in the community.”

Beaches and sunshine

“The house we stayed in was right on the beach. Volunteers from all over Europe stayed there, and it was a great atmosphere. We had a great mix of working and seeing the country, which was beautiful. I got to watch a rugby match at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, and visit the Addo Elephant National Park.”

Going again

“The trip made me so much more appreciative of what I have in life. When you see these kids who have nothing, and yet are so happy just to be at school, it gives you a new perspective on life. I’m so glad the University set up this scheme, and I would definitely recommend it to others. I enjoyed it so much I am volunteering again this summer, this time in Morocco."
