Want a peek at your future
Take a look...
Taking a Higher Education course is a big investment in your future, and you’ll want to be sure that you’re choosing the right course and the right university.
If you decide to come to Birmingham City University, you can be confident that you’ll receive a first-class education with a focus on practical skills and professional relevance, giving you excellent prospects for employment and career development.
Why choosing Birmingham City University can make a real difference to your future:
Investing in your future
Although we have a rich heritage, we’ve constantly invested in improvements to our facilities, ensuring that you benefit from a state-of-the-art learning environment. Our £260 million investment programme includes the new £61 million Parkside Building at our City Centre Campus, with construction on a second new building currently underway. The Complete University Guide rated us as one of the UK's top 10 universities for our spending on facilities in 2012 and 2013.
Increasing your employability
We are one of the top 30 institutions in the UK for placing students in graduate-level jobs (Sunday Times University Guide 2013), while 90 per cent of undergraduate students were in employment or further study within six months of graduating (DLHE survey 2011/12). Whatever subjects you choose, we focus on giving you up-to-date knowledge and real-world experience, so you’ll be ready to launch into your chosen career after graduating. Find out more about our commitment to your employability.
Learn from the best
From the UK's leading criminologist to the first female President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, our teaching staff come from and maintain links with industry, ensuring you benefit from their knowledge and insight. We are also ranked sixth out of 130 institutions for student teaching time (Daily Telegraph course finder) and our schools and courses regularly rank highly in national league tables.
We’ve invested in innovative student support, such as groundbreaking mobile learning and teaching research which brings our courses to life, including the Virtual Case Creator - a pioneering online simulation tool for Health students; the School of Law's Virtual Solicitors' Office; and the School of Education's virtual school. Our online learning site, Moodle, provides 24-hour access to resources and flexible approaches to learning.
Earn while you learn
Our new student employment agency, OpportUNIty - Student Jobs on Campus, allows you to apply for temporary and casual staffing roles at the University, providing experience in crucial aspects of job application, as well as employability skills to take into the workplace.
Some of our courses offer work placements with leading companies – offering vital opportunities to get your foot in the door. Apple, Cisco, Sony and Cartier are just some of the major brands we have links with. Working closely with these companies enable us to develop cutting-edge curriculums and collaborate on course projects.
Working in partnership
We work with our students to ensure we are meeting your needs and aspirations at all times. In 2010, we received a prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) award for ‘Outstanding Student Support’ for a unique project with our Students’ Union partnering academic staff with students to make recommendations on future teaching. Find out what our students said about us in the National Student Survey.
We pride ourselves on the range of professional accreditations - almost 40 at the last count - and the number of successful industry partnerships we have. Professional bodies accrediting our courses include the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, British Psychological Society, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Health and Care Professions Council and Royal Institute of British Architects.
Our new Concept Factory provides dedicated meeting space for entrepreneurial students and graduates to network, share ideas and form collaborations.
In the most recent audit of our research expertise - the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) - the University was recognised as a 'rising star' institution with one of the highest percentages of submitted work rated as 'world leading' compared to other modern universities in the UK. We have recently worked on the EU-backed EnAlgae project to develop the renewable energy sources of the future.
