The Primrose’s Double CD of Brahms’s Piano Quartets, recorded using three pianos from the Gert Hecher Atelier in Vienna, was critically acclaimed and forms the basis for a discussion of practice-led research on the Research Catalogue.

Dorothea Vogel and John Thwaites begin the concert examining performing choices in Brahms’s Viola Sonata in E flat Op. 120 No. 2  having recently recorded a Brahms disc for Meridian. Then the official launch of a new Double CD of French Repertoire is heralded with a performance of Chausson’s Piano Quartet in A Op.30.

Chausson’s own piano was an Erard 2.12 number 50621. The Primrose argue that only with the lighter sound and shallower key of an Erard can a hugely virtuoso romantic chamber music piano part such as this be properly understood. In order to maintain good balance and musical momentum the piano’s thousands of notes must fly, even be thrown away, which comes naturally on the Erard but only antithetically on a modern piano.
