Peter Donohoe Celebrity Piano Recital: Three Late Masterpieces
Mozart Piano Sonata in D K.576
Messiaen La Fauvette des jardins (1972)
Beethoven Sonata in B flat Op.106 - Hammerklavier
Mozart and Beethoven fought for dignity and independence in Enlightenment and Revolutionary/Napoleonic times. Messiaen served shortly as a nurse before being detained by the Nazis at Stalag VIII-A in Silesia 1940-42, after which he was allowed to return to occupied Paris.
Peter studied La Fauvette des jardins with Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod, introducing the work to British audiences shortly thereafter. Framed by two classical masterpieces, and with the rare opportunity to hear Peter take on the monumental Hammerklavier, this concert is a dazzling way to open our season.
Running time approx. two hours including interval.
