RBC Presents: Global Traditions - Edgelarks, Keith Donnelly, Threaded
Global Traditions: A concert series of folk music from around the world
An afternoon of exceptional Folk and Acoustic Music (and humour)
With three intimate concert spots in the jazz club between 3pm and 6:30pm, this promises to be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Edgelarks
Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin began their musical journey together living in a small caravan in the hills near Exmouth. Phil had returned, Chatturangui in tow, from studying slide guitar in India with the master musician Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya. Hannah had grown up playing fiddle at traditional folk sessions. The pair met when they were both recruited to alt-roots outfit The Roots Union, and when the band folded, Phil and Hannah formed a duo. They soon found themselves touring nationally, playing with the likes of Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman, and eventually winning the prestigious Best Duo award at the 2014 BBC Folk Awards.
Extensive international touring followed, from Japan to South Africa, Canada to Australia, whilst closer to home you might have caught them at the Royal Albert Hall or playing to 50,000 people alongside Kylie Minogue and the Manic Street Preachers, for BBC Radio 2's Hyde Park Festival in a Day.
"Extraordinary" BBC 6Music
“Virtuosity, intensity and charisma” The Guardian
Keith Donnelly
There really is no-one else like Keith Donnelly. Even if you don’t think you know Keith’s work you probably do, as he has written material for some of the biggest comedians to come out of the UK.
When playing solo he combines his seriously good guitar playing, singing and songwriting, with the most outrageously funny show. Keith really is hard to describe, but you could say the he’s a stand-up comic, fall-down comedian, surreal snigger-songwriter, guitar-hero, [tall] story-teller, scriptwriter, inner-childminder, leading socialite, raconteur, business tycoon, wit, author, half-wit, shamen, geordie-cultural-attache, word-juggler, snake-charmer, underline-dancer, unexpected clairvoyant, dream-weaver, daydream believer, psycho-linguist, shark-wrangler, smile sculptor, [compulsive] lying-tamer, Great-British eccentric, [alleged] international-jewel-thief, erstwhile slice of bacon, and all-round good egg…
“Keith made me laugh so much; I blew an entire cheese sandwich out of my nose!” Phil Cool
Threaded
Threaded are an acoustic crossover outfit that create and perform original music inspired by world folk culture, nature, stories and personal experiences. Described as ‘beautiful, refreshing and charming’ (Songlines); their compositions fuse influences from traditional and contemporary folk, classical music and world soundscapes, which has culminated in their unique and distinctive sound.
Threaded features the 'super talented’ (Bright Young Folk) Midlands based musicians: Jamie Rutherford (guitar/lead vocals), Ning-ning Li (violin/vocals) and Rosie Rutherford (clarinet/bass clarinet/vocals). The trio have released four studio albums, with their most recent album 'as it always was' released in Summer 2024.
