Kassim Noor Mohammed

Before joining Birmingham City University, Kassim was a Social Sciences Lecturer at Nottingham Trent International College and for four years prior to that he was a Sessional Lecturer in Criminology at Nottingham Trent University. He has taught modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including: Principles of Social Science; Introduction to the Criminal Justice System; British Culture and Society; Crime Reduction; Hi-Tech Crime; White Collar Crime; Research Methods.

Kassim’s PhD was an in-depth investigation into organised kidnap for ransom and a study of a successful Triad kidnapping group. His research explored themes such as career criminality, sub-cultural tolerance of crime and the political economy of crime.

As a former officer with Malaysian Customs and Excise, Kassim has over 20 years of professional enforcement experience. He specialised in field operations, which included surveillance, intelligence gathering, detection and prosecution of organised smuggling and customs fraud syndicates.

In the UK, he was employed with the National Probation Service as a Probations Services Officer, stationed at HMP Whatton, Nottinghamshire. This is a category C prison, which holds over 800 adult male sex offenders. His primary duty in this role was as an accredited Facilitator in the Sex Offenders Treatment Programme (SOTP) for inmates of the prison.
