The School of Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Systems staff are actively involved in a number of exciting research projects. We work collaboratively with business, industry and academic partners to develop ‘real world’ applied solutions focused on range of themes:

Knowledge Based Engineering

Knowledge Based Engineering is an innovative method for Design Engineering Automation, capturing and reusing product and process knowledge for generative ‘what if’ modelling scenarios, allowing businesses to model engineering processes for rapid product development.

Based on its extensive experience with industry, nationally and internationally, the School has developed the UK’s first dedicated Knowledge Based Engineering Lab, offering industry, commerce and professionals access to specialists for the delivery of teaching, training, research and commercial projects, in the areas of Design Systems Automation, Knowledge Based Engineering, Knowledge Management for Design Systems and Decision Support Systems.

Enterprise Systems

The Enterprise Systems group at Birmingham City University, with its leading researchers, academic and industry experts, aims to provide innovative solutions based on real industry challenges, focusing on all aspects of enterprise systems, including: systems engineering, enterprise resource planning, digital economy and smart cities, manufacturing systems, governance, mobility, supply chain, process re-engineering, systems integration, knowledge modelling and visualisation.

The group works closely with a number of partners in engineering, health, transportation, manufacturing and the public sector, offering professional access to specialists for the delivery of research, academic and commercial projects. Underpinning the technical expertise, the centre has a fully equipped research and development laboratory with dedicated research, innovation, development and training areas.

Bioenergy

The Bioenergy research group combines fundamental research with business engagement, product and process innovation and knowledge transfer. The group is currently engaged in a number of applied research projects investigating the cultivation of biomass (microalgae) and its conversion into bioenergy (biofuels and biogas). The focus of this research is to improve the environmental sustainability and commercial viability of bioenergy production via the integration of key technologies and processes.

Powertrain Test and Development

Advanced Powertrain Systems supports a wide range of research, development and test programmes with the automotive industry and other research organisations. The powertrain development facilities, computational resources, academic programmes and technical expertise make it an ideal partner , particularly in the areas of; Advanced Powertrain Control Development, Base Engine Design Optimisation (for both conventional and hybrid vehicle platforms) and Biofuels Development. Underpinning the technical capability is a fully equipped Engine Research and Development Laboratory consisting of two engine test Cells with the ability of accepting a range of engine applications from passenger cars to heavy duty vehicles.

Advanced Manufacturing and Materials

The Advanced Manufacturing and Materials research and development group working closely with a number of manufacturing businesses servicing Automotive, Aerospace, Electrical and Electronics, Food and Drink and Nuclear sectors. The supports a wide range of research and consultancy with industry and other research organisations. Its academic and technical expertise make it an ideal partner, particularly in the areas of: Rapid Prototyping, 3D scanning, CMM, High Speed CNC milling and machining, industry standard CAD/CAM, Advanced Materials testing and development.
