Hospital Chairman given Honorary Doctorate

Dame Christine Braddock, Chairman of Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is to receive an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University next week.

Lancaster-born Christine has over 30 years' experience in senior leadership of further education colleges and was made a Dame in the 2013 New Years Honours list in recognition of her commitment to improving and upholding teaching excellence.

Her time as Principal and Chief Executive of Birmingham Metropolitan College saw her bring together three colleges to create Birmingham MET - now one of the largest and successful colleges in the country.

Before moving into Further Education leadership, Christine worked as a Senior Education Adviser for the Home Office, managing and coordinating education policy and provision in 43 Midland prison establishments, in collaboration with local authorities and further education colleges.

Dame Christine Braddock said: "As Chairman of Birmingham Children's Hospital, which has a long and successful association with Birmingham City University I am delighted and honoured to be presented this award by the University. It is recognition for all the staff teams I have worked with over the years, who have brought about the success for thousands of students and now patients."

Christine is a past President of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group and also the first female member of the Birmingham Local Enterprise Partnership. She has been the Chair of Engineering UK Education and Skills, a Council Member of CBI West Midlands, Council Member of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service Board, Deputy Chair of Birmingham Forward and Deputy Chair of Midland Heart.

In 2012 Christine became High Sheriff of the West Midlands and in 2013 was appointed as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the West Midland.

Christine has also been awarded a CBE in the 2008 Honours List for her services to further education and a DBE in 2013 for services to business and education.
