Comic Art Show to arrive in Birmingham as part of annual comics festival

Comic fans have descended on Birmingham for the second city’s annual comics festival which culminates in a large scale convention on Saturday (June 24).

The third Birmingham Comics Festival has arrived in the city with events running throughout the month, including the Birmingham Comic Art Show, a major exhibition to be held at Birmingham City University.

The Comic Art Show will bring together vendors, comic creators, fans and creative people in the city’s special event.

Fans are expected to don their capes and costumes to join key figures including David Lloyd, illustrator of V for Vendetta and creator of its iconic Guy Fawkes mask, Mike Collins, the artist behind Judge Dredd, and Lew Stringer who has worked for both Marvel and The Beano.

Students at Birmingham City University have worked alongside organisers of the Comics Festival to shoot and record many of the events across the city.

Birmingham has seen a range of activities throughout the month at venues ranging from theatres and cinemas, to pubs and book stores.

Among the venues hosting events are mac Birmingham, the Mockingbird Cinema and Kitchen, the Victoria Theatre Pub, Nostalgia and Comics, Waterstones and the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park.

Robert McLaughlin, Lecturer at Birmingham City University’s School of Digital Media Technology, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many of our students involved with all aspects of the festival and to join both professionals and enthusiasts who are gathering here at the University this weekend to celebrate all things comic related.

Birmingham City University will also host an Academic Day on Friday June 23 which will see the comics looked at from an academic point of view, taking in the historical and social significance of the art form.

The Comic Art Show will also see a host of guests and industry creators ranging from Marvel and DC to long established British comic illustrators and innovative independent creators, who will discuss how to self-publish books.
