City Centre Campus Development

UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 18 MAY 2012

Later this month, Birmingham City University will submit a planning application to build 24,000m² adjacent to the New City Park and Millennium Point in Eastside as part of its continued development of the University’s City Centre Campus – an investment of £125m in total.

Keep up to date with the very latest news on our City Centre Campus.

This is "wonderful news" for the City of Birmingham as it is builds on the University’s presence in Millennium Point and the creative hub being developed as part of Phase I, which will inject £62m regeneration into Eastside by September 2013, when the site opens. Phase II, for which the planning application will be submitted, is expected to house a significant amount of student-facing activities, as well as the Faculties of Birmingham City Business School and Law and Social Sciences, as part of the University’s commitment to improve the student experience and enhance the student community.

Phase II will see a significant amount of our activities being moved from City North to the City Centre and, as part of our planning, the future of the University’s City North Campus at Perry Barr is being reviewed. Detailed options are still being evaluated, which include alternative future uses for the site for both the University and in consultation with Birmingham City Council, having regard to the needs of the local community. Suggestions from other interested parties are welcome and any interest can be emailed to citynorthfeedback@bcu.ac.uk. The Halls of Residence and the Sports Centre will continue to operate at the site.

Discussions will now be held with all interested parties who may be affected by the changes. This will include consultation with staff and students with the aim of ensuring that any concerns are appropriately addressed. More announcements will be made when the likely timing of moves is clearer.

The plans for the Eastside development will clearly have an impact on our site in Perry Barr. While the whole project will take up to three years to come to fruition, we are determined to work with the city, community stakeholders, local businesses and local councillors to ensure that the outcome is a vision that best meets the needs of Perry Barr and its people.
