Why study psychology in Birmingham

Our state-of-the-art campus is the perfect place to undertake a psychology-related course, but other than that, what makes Birmingham so special, and why should you choose to study your degree here?

Our psychology department has a wide range of psychology testing labs to suit all needs.

We have our BPS computer lab, which consists of more than thirty networked computers with psychology-specific software such as SPSS, NVivo and others such as OpenSesame. This lab also has a general workspace with access to psychology and British Psychological Society resources.

Our other research labs vary in size and testing. We have three mini-labs, and two more labs designed for larger groups, fitted with CCTV for experiments that require audio and visual recording.

We also have a lab equipped for eye-tracking experiments. The labs are great for controlling environmental variables and are used by students for research projects.

Our staff are leading experts in the field.

From a student’s point of view, who better to learn from than someone who has held positions in the psychology sector – roles you may one day have. That’s why it’s important to us that our psychology staff have actual professional experience to call upon. Our academics have vital industry experiences such as working for HM Prison Service, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and Birmingham Children's Hospital

Alongside on-campus facilities, it is also worth considering a social sciences school's geographic location for more than one reason. Firstly, it's helpful to look for any information the school offers about their connections to local organisations. Our social sciences school has good relations with organisations on our doorstep, from local police services to social outreach programmes –  resulting in placement and job opportunities for students, as well as insightful visits and talks from industry experts who visit the University to meet with students.

You could embark on a year-long professional placement as part of your degree course. Past placements have seen our students work with organisations such as the NHS, West Midlands Police, HM Prisons and Probation Services, local schools, and youth mentoring services around the city of Birmingham. On our courses you will gain a professional focus and real-world experience of psychology, ensuring you are equipped to make an immediate impact in your career.
