Sandy is a flute player, teacher, and conductor based in Birmingham. Originally from Scotland, he studied Community Music at university in Glasgow before undertaking postgraduate study at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he was taught by Kevin Gowland.

For several years, Sandy served as Head of Woodwind at the Birmingham Music Service. He later moved on to become Head of Music Service in Leicestershire. He currently teaches at King Edward’s Camp Hill School and King Edward’s School in Edgbaston, working as a class teacher, flute teacher, and director of various ensembles. Sandy is also deeply involved in flute choirs. Since 2002, he has directed the Birmingham Flute Choir, a group for amateur adults. Through his work on the Council of the British Flute Society, he organises flute days across the country, often leading the flute choir element of these events. Many of his students have gone on to study music at university or conservatoire.
