Grace Williams Suite for Nine Instruments
Wagner Siegfried Idyll
Ibert Divertissement
Howard Skempton Chamber Concerto
RBC Sinfonietta showcase an exciting selection of works for chamber ensemble beginning with Grace Williams’s Suite for Nine Instruments. Driving rhythms and ostinatos contrast with an evocative slow movement in this favoured work of the self-critical composer who wrote that it was “more satisfying than anything else I’ve done”. Wagner’s intensely personal love song to his wife is full of tenderness, passion and reflections of nature. It was first played on Christmas morning 1870 in the hall of the Wagners’ home.
Ibert’s Divertissement sparkles with playful energy in seven tongue-in-cheek movements that include Cortège (featuring Mendelssohn’s ‘Wedding March’), a soupy Viennese waltz, and cartoon-crazy finale. Finally, the Chamber Concerto by RBC’s own award-winning Lecturer in Composition, Howard Skempton, rounds off an evening of evocative soundscapes.
