Free Lunchtime Jazz

Three senior students lead their bands in consecutive sets of contemporary jazz. It’s the perfect way to look in on what the next generation of jazz musicians are inspired by.

Ben Pond Quintet
Ben Pond tenor saxophone
George Farrell trombone
Ben Shankland piano
Macy Wright bass
Ollie Talbot drums

The Ben Pond Quintet play a set driven by powerful melodies from the 2000s back to the '50s. Expect spacious textures of Dave Holland, raucous sophistication of Sonny Rollins and timeless romance of Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins.

R-J Gilbert alto saxophone
Lue Shen (pictured) guitar
Yiwei Liang piano
Thomas Robinson bass
Kefan Hu drums

The set features a dynamic blend of original jazz fusion compositions and inventive new arrangements of classic standards. Experience a journey where tradition meets innovation through vibrant ensemble interplay.

Rachel Towner bass
Clarisse Dring piano
Aeden Leng guitar
Ewan Davidson drums

Exploring the highlights of jazz through the lense of iconic post-bop compositions and rearrangements of swing classics. The set takes inspiration from the works of Charles Mingus, Art Blakey and Cedar Walton, combined with elements of modern jazz and traditional folk.
