Rabl Clarinet Quartet, Op.1
The second of this evening’s two free concerts of piano chamber music begins with one of Haydn’s pioneering piano trios that make special demands on the pianist. It’s followed by John Ireland’s expressive Phantasie Piano Trio which encompasses a variety of moods and colours in its single-movement span.
There’s lush romantic melody and drama in Saint-Saëns’s arrangement of Liszt’s symphonic poem, Orpheus. And finally, a work by an almost unknown composer for an unusual combination: Walter Rabl entered his Quartet for piano, clarinet, violin and cello into a prestigious Viennese competition where head judge Brahms awarded it First Prize. With an endorsement like that, you can be assured of a worthy and inspired work to end the concert.
