Following the appointment of BMus Flautist Lottie Mahoney as Birmingham Royal Ballet's (BRB) Student-in-Residence 2024, fellow student Alex Hocknull, who was BRB Student-in-Residence in 2023, has auditioned for a permanent position with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the orchestra of BRB, and been offered a trial.

Alex is studying a PgCert in Instrumental Performance at RBC. The Student-in-Residence scheme, now in its third year, provided Alex with numerous opportunities to play and learn from London rehearsals with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

Alex said: “I’m excited to have been offered a trial for fourth horn with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Having spent the last year getting to know the orchestra, learning and building my confidence as their Student-in-Residence. I am looking forward to going back and# hope I can do a good job.”

Director of Postgraduate Studies (Music) Luan Shaw said: “We couldn't be prouder of Alex! This is a huge achievement and is testament to his hard work, building on his success as former BRB Student-in-Residence. We wish him all the best with the trial."

Head of Brass Ed Jones: “Alex is a brilliant, young horn player with a fantastic attitude. I am absolutely thrilled that his professionalism and exemplary musicianship have resulted in him being offered this exciting opportunity.”
