To Michael Gibbs: in Celebration
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire celebrates the musical career of Michael Gibbs, one of the greatest composers and arrangers to have worked in the field of jazz, pop, TV and film. For more than six decades, Gibbs has been inspiring musicians and audiences through his collaborations with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Bill Frisell, Gary Burton, and John McLaughlin, and he continues to influence new generations of young musicians through his 25-year connection with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the exciting recent donation of his archive.
Events are planned across four days in November, starting on Monday 10th with an exhibition of artefacts from the Michael Gibbs Collection (including rare scores, photographs, documents and recordings) and culminating with a variety of performances across different venues on Thursday 13th.
In the afternoon of the 13th, the Bradshaw Hall will host an extra special performance of a selection of Gibbs’ orchestral and chamber works, transcribed from the original scores now held in the archive and conducted by RBC Jazz Lecturer Ed Puddick.
The evening of the 13th will see two simultaneous performances. In The Lab, RBC jazz students will play some of the small band compositions which made Mike a familiar name to so many musicians in the early part of his career, thanks to prominent recordings by Gary Burton and Stan Getz. Meanwhile, the Eastide Jazz Club will host a performance by the RBC Jazz Orchestra. Mike’s music has been part of their repertoire for over a quarter of a century, so expect to hear some firm favourites alongside some recently rediscovered scores from the archive!
