RBC Indo-Jazz Ensemble plays music inspired by North and South Indian ragas. It is a project put together by visiting artist Radhika Balakrishnan and RBC’s own Shanti Jayasinha. They take the raga as a starting point and interpret it as jazz musicians but informed by the way Indian musicians develop their improvisations.
RBC has a venerable history of incorporating Indian Music into the curriculum, having had pioneer John Mayer in residence in the 1990s, and this band pays tribute to him, playing one of his seminal compositions from the 1963 record Indo-Jazz Fusions that he made with Joe Harriott.
