Head of Vocal and Operatic Studies Paul Wingfield conducted the orchestra of Opera North in a Sky Arts project earlier this month that featured a new commission from British-Nigerian artist, Nwando Ebizie.

Paul was asked to conduct Nwando’s ten-minute piece, ‘Somewhere’, which was performed in Leeds by an eclectic line-up including the orchestra of Opera North, a children’s choir and Afro-Brazilian drummers.

Sky Arts aims to shine a light on exciting works by up-and-coming composers like Nwando through pieces such as ‘Somewhere’. The recording will be released on Sky Arts later this year.

The multi-layered orchestral piece explored the themes of childhood, quests and overcoming in a unique fusion of styles from symphonic through to Afro-Brazilian drumming.

Paul said: “It was fantastic to work with the orchestra of Opera North and Nwando Ebizie on this fascinating project for Sky Arts. It’s always exciting to bring new work to life and I’m excited to hear the final result later in the year. Initiatives such as these are essentially important in giving a voice to a diverse range of composers and help energise our industry. I have loved collaborating with a wide range of talented individuals to bring Nwando’s creation to life.”
