Flautist Marie-Christine Zupancic

Visiting Lecturer in flute Marie-Christine Zupancic features in Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla’s latest City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) CD ‘Hidden Depths’, which continues the composer’s exploration of the music of Mieczysław Weinberg.

Mirga conducts this latest Deutsche Grammophon release, which presents Weinberg’s Third and Seventh Symphonies, as well as Flute Concerto No. 1. Marie-Christine plays Lead Flute in the later, capturing every changing nuance.

Marie-Christine, who is currently touring in the US, said: “It has been a very exciting journey discovering Weinberg’s music with Mirga and the CBSO over the past few years. I was thrilled to be asked by her to record his Flute Concerto No. 1 – a real gem of a piece!

“The flute starts off the first movement in a whirlwind of notes and the wild energy doesn’t stop until the end. The second movement is incredibly slow with a sad floating melody that ends in a single note, which leads into the melancholic waltz of the last movement. I hope this piece finds its way into mainstream flute repertoire.”

The CD was released last month and can be purchased online.
