Celebrating Michael Gibbs

RBC is celebrating the musical career of Visiting Artist Michael Gibbs by presenting him with an Honorary Doctorate. Michael has a 25-year-long connection with RBC and has collaborated with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Bill Frisell, Gary Burton and John McLaughlin.

Events recognising Michael’s work are planned across RBC throughout November, beginning with an exhibition of artifacts from the Michael Gibbs Collection on Monday 10 November. Pieces featuring in the exhibition will include rare scores, photographs, documents and recordings.

Michael’s Honorary Doctorate presentation will take place in Bradshaw Hall on Thursday 13 November, accompanied by a performance of a selection of Gibbs’ orchestral and chamber works conducted by Jazz Lecturer Ed Puddick.

The presentation will then be followed by two simultaneous performances across RBC. In The Lab, Jazz students will play some of the small band compositions which made Mike a familiar name to so many musicians, while Eastside Jazz Club will host a performance from RBC’s Jazz Orchestra.

Michael’s music has been part of the Orchestra’s repertoire for over a quarter of a century. Staff, students and fans of Michael Gibbs can book tickets to the Honorary Doctorate presentation and musical performances here.

Principal Stephen Maddock commented: “RBC is proud to be awarding Michael Gibbs an Honorary Doctorate. His contribution to RBC as a teacher and visiting artist has provided generations of students with a valuable source of knowledge and encouragement.

“These events not only celebrate Michael’s career, but also the many achievements of the students and colleagues he has inspired with his music and humanity.”

Michael Gibbs added: “I am thrilled and honoured to be receiving this award. I have always enjoyed my visits to Birmingham; it's been a pleasure to work with so many dedicated and enthusiastic students and colleagues over the years!”
