Jonathan Gunthorpe

For thirty years, Jonathan has had an eclectic, international career in opera, concert, recital, and theatre. He has performed roles across Europe for opera companies such as The Royal Ballet and Opera, La Scala, La Monnaie, San Carlo, Grieghallen, and Casa da Musica, Porto. Further afield, he made his Chinese debut in Guangzhou, and North American in Los Angeles. Concert and recital platforms have included Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw, Parco della Musica, Rome, many beautiful churches, and a circus tent in Nuremberg Zoo. His repertoire has ranged from earlier music, performing with groups such as The Sixteen, and Gabrieli Consort, through to new music – a particular interest - having premiered over 50 works and workshopped many more. Further work on stage has included Sondheim at Théâtre du Châtelet, and a six-month contract as an actor at the National Theatre.

Teaching is an integral part of Jonathan’s life. He is dedicated to finding the individual core to every voice, combining historical perspectives of vocal pedagogy, where useful, with the insights offered by contemporary vocal science. He enjoys a busy teaching schedule, working with all voice types at all levels in Birmingham, London, and online across Europe and China.
