Bassoon Reedmaking Tutor and Contrabassoon Tutor

Gareth Twigg is Principal Contrabassoon of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he has held since 2009.

Under the tenure of Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, highlights include recording the complete Shostakovich Symphonies for Naxos, and playing the solo Contrabassoon part to ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’.

He also has a busy freelance career, performing as both Guest Principal and Contrabassoon with the UK’s leading orchestras and ensembles. These include the LSO, RPO, Britten Sinfonia, John Wilson Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, CBSO, BBC Philharmonic, Hallè and BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Gareth, who has also been known to play the heckelphone, graduated from the RNCM in 2001 with First Class Honours and two Professional Performance Diplomas (PPRNCM). He studied as a Postgraduate with Andrea de Flammeneis at the RCM, achieving Distinction in solo and orchestral performance.

Upon graduating, Gareth was awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal. Prior to moving to Merseyside, he freelanced in London and was Associate Principal Bassoon with the RTÈ National Symphony Orchestra.
