Dr Gareth Thomas is a full time lecturer and Head of Year two at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He completed his BMus and MA degrees at Cardiff University before moving to the University of Birmingham to complete his PhD on ‘The impact of Russian music in Britain 1893-1929’.

He has been part of the teaching staff at RBC since 2001. His interests lie in 19th and 20th Century music, in particular British and Russian music, and in the cultural politics of music. He is currently supervising a PhD student conducting research on Alexei Stanchinsky. Outside of teaching Gareth enjoys choral singing with the CBSO Chorus and is a keen cyclist.
