Dr Bobbie-Jane Gardner

Bobbie-Jane Gardner is a composer, arranger, researcher, and senior lecturer whose creative practice centres on examining a Black aesthetic in contemporary and experimental musical practices, as well as collaborative, hyperlocal, and interdisciplinary creation. Her music is celebrated for being lyrical, harmonically subtle, and rhythmically agile, frequently drawing structural and aesthetic inspiration from jazz, hip-hop, soul, and funk.

Driven by an interest in the people, spaces, and oral histories that shape musical ecosystems, her work heavily explores community-led and place-based artistry. Her major city-wide project, for-Wards, engaged over 800 Birmingham residents across 40 wards to co-create music inspired by their local environments.

Alongside her academic research into the cultural impact and invisible labour of Black composer-arrangers, she frequently collaborates with filmmakers, visual artists, and communities to document creative histories. Commissions include works for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), Spitalfields Music, Onyx Brass, G Plus Ensemble, and Wild Plum Arts.
