Art in the Workplace: The Artist Placement Group and Me
James McIlwrath - Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

The Artist Placement Group (APG) existed in the latter half of the 20th Century, to expand the role of artists within society, specifically by placing them within businesses, companies and even departments of governments with the aim for the artists’ outsider experience to positively affect their host.

James McIlwrath's PhD research project involved a similar situation, becoming experimental theatre company Stan’s Cafe’s composer-in-residence for two years. In his talk, James will present an overview of the intriguing work by the APG artists, how their work affected his own residency within Stan’s Café, and discuss how similar projects could be utilised in contemporary society.

James McIlwrath is an experimental composer/performer and curator from Bangor, Northern Ireland currently studying in Birmingham.

James curates AMOK, an experimental performance and music platform at Artefact in Birmingham.

James is studying an M4C and AHRC-supported PhD, in collaboration with Birmingham-based Theatre company Stan’s Cafe, and he has been invited to perform and share his research at Convergence Conference Leicester 2022 and Borderlands RMA/BFE student conference at Northumbria 2023.

James was the 2020 winner of Nonclassical’s Battle of the Bands and has performed his work in Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and across the UK.

Seminars are in RBC Workshop 2 and can also be accessed online via Zoom. A link to view the seminar via Zoom will be emailed ahead of the session.

Real and virtual doors will open around 3.25pm, the seminar begins at 3.30pm and discussion will conclude around 4.55pm.
