Public Research Seminar - Daniel Tong (RBC)
Re-reading Beethoven. Twenty-first century perspectives in the Sonatas for Violin and Piano
Beethoven's ten Sonatas for violin and piano are canonic works among chamber musicians, but often somewhat overlooked by scholars. This seminar introduces readings of two of the Sonatas (Op.30, No.1 and Op.96) that question traditional perspectives on Beethoven and his music: firstly, via a notion of disability that is lived, rather than 'overcome' via a heroic personal narrative; secondly, a lyrical Romantic impulse that strongly appealed to the Schumann circle. Daniel's duo partner Sara Trickey joins him for musical illustration.
Daniel Tong is a pianist, teacher and writer. He performs as soloist and chamber musician, often with his London Bridge Trio, on both modern and period instruments. He has recently released recordings of the complete Beethoven Cello and Piano works, Faure Cello and Piano Works, and Beethoven Op.10 Piano Sonatas (all on Resonus Classics) as well as the Beethoven Violin Sonatas (SOMM). He is Head of Piano in Chamber Music at RBC, as well as Head of Performance at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music.
His book on the Beethoven Violin Sonatas is published early next year by Boydell & Brewer.
Running time approx. one hour and 30 minutes
