Roy Howat

A fresh evaluation of Chopin’s 27 Etudes: the new Peters critical edition

Roy Howat (Royal Academy of Music)

The publication in February of Chopin’s Op.25 Etudes completed Roy Howat’s editing of all Chopin’s 27 Etudes for Peters Edition’s Complete Chopin: A new critical edition. Despite all the extant editions, a surprising number of corrections and original variants still remained to be published here for the first time. A consequent re-evaluation of the pieces includes the broader issue of what Chopin intended in these pieces: ‘Etudes’ in what and how many respects?

Roy Howat is equally known as pianist and musical researcher. The author of two major books (Debussy in Proportion, 1983, and The Art of French Piano Music, 2009), he has produced critical editions of major works by Debussy, Fauré, Chopin and Chabrier, and can be heard as pianist on numerous CDs. He holds dual posts as Keyboard Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music and Senior Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
