Acknowledged Messiaen interpreter, Peter Donohoe studied in Paris with the pianist Yvonne Loriod, later Messiaen’s wife, for whom this piece was written. Donohoe’s recording of this work describes “a mosaic-like collage in which a jaunty rhythmic refrain is contrasted with a multiplicity of contrasting ideas, many of which are re-workings from his gargantuan Turangalîla-Symphonie”. Mendelssohn’s sonata, inspired by Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ sonata, provides a counterweight.
