Congratulations to BMus student Venesca Yapson (piano) and MMus student Alastair Legg (violin) who have been awarded an £11,000 Joseph Weingarten Memorial Trust Scholarship to undertake a year of postgraduate study at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

The Joseph Weingarten Memorial Trust Scholarship was launched in 1997 as a bilateral programme for postgraduate study between RBC and the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

The namesake of the Scholarship is Joseph Weingarten, a distinguished pianist, who studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest but pursued a long career in London. He was also an outstanding teacher who taught at the Birmingham School of Music, which is now RBC.

Joseph made a substantial donation in bequesting funds to the Joseph Weingarten Memorial Trust, which supports postgraduate study in piano, violin or voice at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Liszt Academy, Budapest. The Trust is managed on behalf of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire by Birmingham City University.

Both scholars selected will take up their study in Budapest in September 2023.
