Students compose for renowned chamber choir

The Sitwell Singers

Seven student composers wrote pieces for The Sitwell Singers and conductor Dexter Drown for a free, one-hour concert at St John’s Church in Derby recently.

The Sitwell Singers are widely regarded as one of the best chamber choirs in Derbyshire. While the students are starting their musical careers, the singers have been making music together for more than 50 years.

All seven composition students: Wiktor Wysocki; Archie McIlhargey; Oliver Howlett; Yuri Bryars; Vinícius Motta; Jamie-Lou and Nicholas Paul introduced their composition through a short conversation with Dexter, who is also Musical Director of the group and conductor for The Sinfonia Stellaris.

Music writer Mike Wheeler for The Classical Music Daily described the concert as a “runaway success” and “even more encouraging was the fact that there was already talk of a similar event next year.”
