Fourth-year BMus flute student Adelaide Starling was awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Sir Felix Cassell Silver Medal recently.

Alongside her flute studies at RBC, Adelaide is a Royal Air Force (RAF) Reserve musician and was honoured with the medal for performing to the highest standards while undergoing RAF Music Services professional training.

The Medal is bestowed by the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the only City of London Livery Company dedicated to the performing arts, nurturing talent and sharing music through awards, concerts, outreach and a young artists’ programme.

Adelaide joined RAF Music Services in August 2024, while in her second year of study at RBC. She chose a career as a musician in the armed forces after performing with the Central Band of the RAF with the Hertfordshire Schools Wind Sinfonia at 14 years old. RAF Music service offers opportunities from concerts and parades to television and international performances.

The awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday 18 November at Goldsmiths’ Hall, London.

Adelaide commented: “I am honoured to have been awarded this achievement, and it is a very proud moment for me. I thank the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force for supporting me throughout my journey at university and providing me with amazing opportunities and experiences before I join full time in 2026.

Head of Undergraduate Studies in Music Duncan Fielden said: "It is a testament to Adelaide’s dedication to her craft and organisational skills that she has successfully pursued her full-time music degree alongside the wonderful opportunities offered by the Royal Air Force. We at RBC are delighted that her hard work has been recognised in this manner and are immensely proud of her.”

Squadron Leader Ted Sellers said: “My heart-felt congratulations for this wonderful achievement. Adelaide’s commitment, positive attitude, professionalism and musicianship in her first year of service with the RAF has been nothing short of exceptional. A tremendous start to Adelaide’s RAF career.”
