RBC recruits two outstanding new Heads

New RBC Head of Brass Ed Jones and head of Strings Nick Trygstad

Royal Birmingham Conservatoire is very pleased to announce the appointment of two new senior musicians and educators Edward Jones and Nicholas Trygstad.

Edward Jones, currently Interim Head of Brass at RBC, has been appointed to the permanent role of Head of Brass; while Nicholas Trygstad, currently Cello Section Leader of Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, will join RBC in the spring as Head of Strings.

Stephen Maddock OBE, Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire said, “Eight months into my time at RBC, I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming two outstanding musicians, both with such distinguished orchestral backgrounds, to head up two of our largest departments of orchestral instruments.”

At the age of 23, Edward Jones was appointed Trombone Section Leader at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as Guest Principal with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic and the Hallé.

Ed is a former member of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and the brass ensemble Septura. He has enjoyed teaching at the Conservatoire for over fifteen years and is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.

Born in Minnesota US, Nicholas Trygstad took the position of Principal Cellist with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera upon completion of his studies. Soon afterwards he was appointed Cello Section Leader of Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, a position he has held since 2005. Nick is also a tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and has taught at the RNCM for 15 years. 

In addition to his successful orchestral career Nick regularly plays in solo recitals and chamber music collaborations around the UK and has appeared as a concerto soloist. He frequently performs with the innovative ensemble Manchester Collective, of which he is also a Trustee.
