Lecturer in Composition Andrew Hamilton has received a Hamlyn Award for Artists.

These annual awards aim to provide artists of all ages with the financial freedom they need to develop their creative ideas and drive forward their personal and professional growth.

The £75,000 award will support Andrew to surmount practical limitations and outside pressures to progress with his composition work. He is free to use the award as he sees fit.

The annual Hamlyn Awards for Artists are bestowed by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which aims to supports artists at a timely moment in their careers. It has benefited 357 artists since 1994 with awards totalling £11.29 million.

Andrew said: “Receiving the Award at a mid-career point is enormously uplifting, as it has given me a sign that I just might have been on the right track for the past 25 or so years, as well as a sense of confidence and support to keep going. The award will allow me the space to work on uncommissioned projects and time to learn new skills, hopefully leading to new discoveries in my work.”
