Head of Screen and Audio Francesco Gabriele’s horror short, Hunger Beneath the Moonlight, had its world premiere at the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in Estonia recently. The festival is one of the largest horror, fantasy and cult movie festivals in the world, and is part of the Méliès International Festivals Federation network.

Festival goers were captivated by the 16mm horror short’s blend of seduction, blood and dark humour, inspired by the vivid style of the 80s Italian Giallo.

Italy’s yellow genre includes slashers, thrillers, psychological horror and sexploitation. Historically, the origins of this genre stem from the pulp crime novels that were popular in Italy during the Second World War, which were identifiable from their yellow covers.

The quality and creativity of Francesco’s film was recognised by a jury of industry experts who nominated the short for a Méliès d’Argent (Silver) award. These accolades are bestowed by the Méliès International Festivals Federation to support the production and circulation of European fantasy, horror and science fiction cinema.

Francesco said: "Premiering my film was an incredible experience. With two sold-out screenings and such a warm, engaged audience response, it was the perfect launch for the film and a truly encouraging start to its festival journey.”
