Head of Percussion Toby Kearney plays with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and prides himself on being a jack of all trades. In his role at RBC, Toby tries to promote a strong culture of teamwork and respect to enable our students to flourish in the small percussion community.
What are the core skills or areas of expertise that you bring to RBC?
As a percussionist, I’ve played in just about every musical setting possible. Since I started playing drums as a teenager, I’ve always been fascinated by the breadth and variety of percussion instruments, disciplines and styles. I’ve strived to be as versatile a musician as possible, and whilst I’m primarily an orchestral player now with the CBSO, I pride myself on being a jack of all trades. For students and graduates in today’s industry, nothing makes you more employable than being versatile, so this is a passion that informs every decision I make at RBC.
What have been your highlights since you started at RBC?
Any moment when my department comes together – from our flagship series of ensemble concerts at Digbeth’s Centrala, to a trip to the Woodman with all the students buzzing after a great masterclass.
The percussion community in the UK is small and relies heavily on a strong culture of teamwork and respect, so nothing makes me prouder than seeing the next generation share and build on those values.
Individual student and graduate successes are incredibly rewarding, from winning a job in an orchestra or West End show, to making a technical breakthrough as a result of months of hard work.
What have been the most challenging issues that you’ve had to discuss and take a view on so far?
Finding and maintaining a path for every student can be extremely challenging, particularly with students who struggle to communicate well. Percussion is a team sport, and I’ve learned the importance of keeping communication strong between students across all years to avoid any resentment developing.
What are your ambitions for RBC?
To believe in our offer and compete with other UK conservatoires. At RBC we are open and inclusive, and I think this is our strongest point of difference to our competitors.
What do you to outside of the role when you are not working?
I play a lot of concerts with the CBSO on the other side of town, and when I’m not doing that, I’m dad to two fantastic lads.
