Byrdwatching in Cheltenham

As part of the Cheltenham Festival, students took part in an innovative event to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of late Renaissance composer William Byrd.

‘Byrdwatching’ involved RBC’s viol, recorder, and vocal consorts, as well as student harpsichordists performing music by the 17th Century composer in four of Cheltenham’s historic Georgian houses.

The performances also featured a brand-new work, ‘In the New Moon’ by composer Aileen Sweeney, which was commissioned by the Cheltenham Festival for RBC’s Recorder Department (Recorder Department and composer pictured).

The cross-department project was devised by Tutors Annabel Knight, Jeffrey Skidmore, David Hatcher, Imogen Seth-Smith and Martin Perkins.
