Acting graduate Jennifer English has won Best Lead Performance at this year’s Golden Joystick Awards.

Jennifer scooped the accolade for her portrayal of Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a dark-fantasy game following the volunteers of Expedition 33 as they set out to destroy the Paintress, a being causing the yearly Gommage, which erases those at or above an ever-decreasing age.

Developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive, the game took away the most awards from this year’s glittering awards ceremony, held in London on Thursday 24 November.

Now in its 43rd year, the Golden Joystick Awards is the world’s largest public-voting gaming awards, recognising global talent across the video game industry. The awards celebrate the games that bring joy and community to players, as well as the creative people who bring them to life.

The Best Lead Performance award honours artists whose work significantly elevates the experience of playing video games.

In 2024, Jennifer was named a BAFTA Breakthrough UK Participant for her standout performance as Shadowheart in the game Baldur’s Gate III. These talented newcomers from across film, games and television are chosen by leading industry figures.

During her acceptance speech, Jennifer said: “Thank you so much to everyone for voting. Maelle’s character embarks on a crazy journey; she chooses to leave a life that was not serving her – something that I did myself a few years ago. I chose a life that was authentic, I chose queer joy. As a result of that joy, I felt safe enough to pour my grief, pain and love into an incredibly, beautifully written character – and I am so proud that.”

Course Director Acting Daniele Sanderson commented: “We are immensely proud of Jenny’s achievements since graduation. She was and is the loveliest and genuine young woman, and is very kind, gentle and hard working. She overcame some physical challenges on the course to become a super young actor. We wish her every continued success.”

Vice Principle Acting Professor Stephen Simms added: “The gaming industry is bigger than the film and music industries combined, and it is thrilling for one of our graduates to be recognised for their incredible acting skills at such a global level. We send Jennifer all our congratulations on winning this award."
