Max's concert music includes two commissions for the LSO and more recently a premiere of a new percussion concerto for Colin Currie commissioned by Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine which was premiered in 2013. He has also written and recorded with the Elysian Quartet, Oliver Coates, Joby Burgess and Okeanos amongst others.
He has also written extensively for film and television. His feature film work includes award winning films for Pawel Pawlikowski (Last Resort and Woman in the Fifth) as well as feature documentaries such as Village at the End of the World and Donor Unknown. In 2012 the British Film Institute commissioned a new live score for the 1929 Eisenstein film, The General Line which he co-composed with Edmund Finnis and the Elysian Quartet.
As an arranger, Max worked with Plaid last year on a new acoustic version of their score for cult manga film Tekkonkinkreet, for a performance at Sydney Opera House. He has also arranged music for Matthew Herbert's One Day Concert at the RFH for the London Sinfonietta as well as his new opera, The Crackle for the ROH premiered in 2014.
Max is also a keen instrument builder and was asked in 2010 by Radio 3's Late Junction to take part in a live broadcast from BBC Maida Vale studios to celebrate their 10th anniversary in which he played his own set of Harry Partch inspired Cloud Chamber Bowls.
