Centre for American Legal Studies

The Centre for American Legal Studies (CALS) is a centre of excellence for the study of law and legal matters relating to the USA.

CALS members work collaboratively with partner organisations to deliver innovative research and pedagogical opportunities.

Their current areas of work include federalism and intergovernmental relations; the nature of judicial process; the administration of criminal justice; and the US and international human rights obligations. CALS members are supported by a cohort of postgraduate research students.

CALS is home to the British Journal of American Legal Studies and the Controversies in American Constitutional Law series published by Routledge.

The Centre also supports the LLB with American Legal Studies pathway for the LLB programme and a student US internship programme that is the largest in the UK.
