The Centre for American Legal Studies (CALS) is a Centre of Excellence within Birmingham City University, and we have formulated a learning environment to promote excellence in research, teaching and consultancy in American law and policy. CALS provides a collaborative enterprise for students and practitioners, and engages both theoretical and practical teaching. CALS coordinates a visionary American Legal Practice course and a student internship program across the United States in attorney’s offices, judge’s chambers, universities and public organisations. We organise our programs in consultation with our Visiting Professors, Visiting Practitioners, and host offices. We have developed expertise in United States law and advise public bodies, professional organisations and governments. In partnership with non-governmental organisations and professional law bodies, such as the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales, we file amicus curiae briefs into various United States courts, including the United States Supreme Court. CALS hosts The British Journal of American Legal Studies (BJALS).
