ResearchThe School of Media’s research is organised within the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research and the Institute for Digital Experience & Applications.

This vibrant centre is staffed by more than 30 research academics and research degree students who work broadly in the field of media and cultural studies.

The Centre’s activities include regular research seminars, which allow scholars from within the school, as well as colleagues from other universities, to present completed and in-process research. Postgraduate students join staff to respond to work presented and to discuss emerging themes and trends in media studies scholarship.

Recent research seminar programmes have included presentations as diverse as:

  • Digital media archives
  • Popular music history
  • Documentary film-making
  • The implications of mass data storage
  • Fan digital media production
  • The politics of dancing in the Northern Soul scene
  • Uses of radio by rural Ugandan women
  • Reality television and online political deliberation
  • Amateur folk music cultures
